Our History

Gender Rights Watch (GRW) was founded in January 2023 by Co-Founders Muaz Chaudhry and Aabyaz Mustafa. Aabyaz Mustafa serves as the CEO of the organization, while Muaz Chaudhry takes on the role of President. Together, they envisioned GRW as a beacon of hope and advocacy for gender minorities worldwide. The organization emerged in response to the escalating violence and discrimination faced by the transgender community in Pakistan, particularly after the annulment of the Transgender Rights Persons Act in 2018.

The annulment of the Transgender Rights Persons Act alongside religious extremism led to a surge in hate crimes, including mass murders, acid attacks, and rape cases targeting gender minorities and women. Recognizing the urgent need for action, resources and expertise were mobilized to establish GRW and address the pressing challenges facingD in Pakistan and beyond.

Under the leadership of Muaz Chaudhry as President and Aabyaz Mustafa as CEO, GRW has become a prominent voice for advocacy and social justice. Supported by the Obama Foundation, Muaz Chaudhry directly interacts with former President Barack Obama to further the mission of advocating for minority rights globally. This support has enabled GRW to expand its reach and impact, amplifying the voices of gender minorities and driving positive change on an international scale.

Despite facing numerous obstacles, GRW remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting equality, justice, and dignity for all gender minorities. Through strategic advocacy, education, and support services, GRW continues to challenge discrimination, combat hate narratives, and build a more inclusive society where every individual can live free from fear and oppression.
